ELECTRICAL TROUBLESHOOTINGThis section describes basic electrical troubleshooting and test equipment use.
Electrical troubleshooting can be very time-consuming and frustrating without proper knowledge and a suitable plan. Refer to the wiring diagrams at the end of the manual for component and connector identification.
Use the wiring diagrams to help determine how the circuit works by tracing the current paths from the power source through the circuit components to ground. Also check any circuits that share the same fuse, ground or switch.
If the other circuits work properly and the shared wiring is in good condition, the cause must be in the wiring used only by the suspect circuit.
If all related circuits are faulty at the same time, the probable cause is a poor ground connection or a blown fuse(s).
As with all troubleshooting procedures, analyze typical symptoms in a systematic process. Never assume anything and do not overlook the obvious like a blown fuse or an electrical connector that has separated.
Test the simplest and most obvious cause first and try to make tests at easily accessible points on the motorcycle.

LEFT CRANKCASE COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
- Remove the rear cowl as described in Chapter Sixteen.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable as described under Battery Removal / Installation in this chapter.
- Follow the wiring harness from the crankcase cover to the alternator electrical connector (Figure 12, typical) on the left side of the frame. Disconnect the following:
- On 1999-2000 models, disconnect the stator coil three-pin white electrical connector on the left side.
- On 2001-on models, disconnect the three-pin white electrical connector (Figure 12) located behind the fuel tank.
